The overall objective of the Action Alliance for Sustainable Bananas is to ensure that all bananas marketed on the German market are produced more sustainably along the entire value chain, thus respecting human rights and promoting environmental protection. In concrete terms, vertical cooperation with partners in the value chain should improve the living and working conditions in the countries of production as well as the wages or rather the incomes of producers and workers. In the long term, the envisaged payment of minimum living wages will be based on the calculation methods of the World Banana Forum or the ISEAL Global living wage coalition.
The protection of biodiversity and varietal diversity in production should be increased and the environmental impacts reduced.
Small-scale farmers’ organisations should be involved in long-term trading partnerships and be empowered to meet the requirements of these partnerships. Sustainable production also needs to cover the costs of social and environmental standards: the banana producers should have enough economic scope for sustainable production. Other objectives are the motivation of the consumers through communication and education opportunities towards an increased appreciation of socially and environmentally acceptable bananas and thus sustainable patterns of consumption. Supply chains should become more transparent so that everyone knows where and how bananas are produced.
