To assess the sustainability of bananas on the German market, the Action Alliance for sustainable bananas has commissioned an external study. It comes to the conclusion that important steps have already been taken since a large part of the German supermarkets already sell certified bananas. However, banana cultivation remains a challenge: the use of pesticides, the repression of trade unions, the lack of cooperation with small farmers’ associations, discrimination against women and migrant workers, and the payment of insufficient wages. In the study, the views of various stakeholders were analysed, and recommendations were made on the further orientation of the ABNB.
